Women and Wealth

Speaker: Mariko Chang, PhD, Scholar and Author

In this session, participants will learn about the challenges to wealth that are unique to women and how to anticipate and overcome those challenges. Various models will be presented and participants will be able to compare them to their own personal wealth scenarios. Participants will be encouraged to offer their own real life challenges to gaining wealth, to Welcome to the Third Annual WAHE Conference 3 contribute to the group’s constructive discussion. Dr. Chang will be selling and signing her book, Shortchanged: Why Women Have Less Wealth and What Can Be Done About It.

What Women Need to Know About Friend-Raising and Fund-Raising in Higher Education

Speakers: Kirsten Rasmussen, Assistant Vice President of Stewardship, The George Washington University and Emma Amuti, Director of Research and Prospect Management, The George Washington University

Attendees will receive insights into advancement from multiple perspectives. The importance of relationships in fundraising will be discussed, as well as women’s tendencies to donate to more tangible causes with a direct connection to people. The discussion will also consider what having more educated, gainfully employed women means for woman-centered philanthropy.

Women Gain in Education but not Power

Speaker: Barbara Gault, Ph.D., Executive Director and Vice President, Institute for Women’s Policy Research

Although women are better represented in the labor market than they used to be, and their education levels have increased, they still earn less than men, and continue to be under-represented in high-power positions. This session will discuss trends in earnings and labor force participation among women, persistent myths about women’s advancement, and strategies for increasing women’s influence in the workplace.

Equity Issues and the Recession: Implications for Women and Men

Speaker: Lisa M. Maatz, Director of Public Policy and Government Relations, AAUW

This roundtable plenary session will highlight pressing public policy issues for women in higher education and the workforce in light of current economic and political realities. The speaker will discuss the impact of the recession on women and men, implications for pay equity, and work/life balance. Participants also will engage in roundtable discussions on these contemporary issues.

Leadership and Positive Psychology

Speakers: Judy Touchton, PhD, Consultant and Author and Nance Lucas, PhD, Associate Director, George Mason University

Participants will explore behavioral, leadership, and
management strategies that women can employ to increase the number of women in policy-making and leadership positions. Dr. Touchton will be selling and signing copies of her book, Women’s Paths to Happiness.

Gender Diversity in Higher Education

Speaker: Fatima Goss Graves, Vice President for Education and Employment, National Women’s Law Center

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has announced investigations into the admissions practices of 19 colleges and universities. Are private and public higher education institutions considering gender in admissions? How can colleges and universities achieve a diverse student body consistent with the mandates of Title IX?

Participants will be encouraged to facilitate impromptu discussions on the day’s sessions during the Open Forum, which also provides an opportunity to network and greet colleagues.

The Future of Women Leaders in Higher Education

Speaker: Jan Greenwood, PhD, CEO of Greenwood/Asher & Associates, Inc., Executive Search, Consulting, and Training

Dr. Greenwood will provide inspiration, advice, and insights on “secrets for success” for women who are climbing the rungs of the higher education leadership ladder. She will describe “the blue suit rule,” the New Girls Network, and negotiation rules that help women administrators in higher education as they strive for leadership roles.
